Electric moped OEM & ODM in China — buyer's guide

How distributors, importers and fleet operators should evaluate Chinese electric moped suppliers: what to specify, which certifications each market requires, and how the OEM/ODM process works.

Why source electric mopeds from China

China is the world's largest production base for light electric vehicles, with a mature supply chain for lithium cells, hub and mid-drive motors, controllers and cast frames. That density is what lets a buyer move from a sample to a container in weeks rather than quarters, and mix models within a single order. The trade-off to manage is compliance: every destination market has its own type-approval and documentation rules, and the supplier's job is to hand you a shipment that clears customs and registration without surprises.

What to specify before you order

  • Battery. Cell format (cylindrical or pouch), pack voltage and capacity, and the UN38.3 test summary with MSDS for every lithium cell and pack. Ask how thermal management and over-discharge protection are handled.
  • Motor and controller. Hub versus mid-drive, rated versus peak power, and whether regenerative braking and a companion app are part of the build.
  • Frame, brakes and lighting. Material and welding standard, CBS or ABS, and E-mark lighting where the market requires it.
  • Range and speed class. Real-world range against the lab figure, and the speed class that fits your local classification and its licence or registration implications.
  • OEM and ODM scope. Logo, colourway, packaging artwork, firmware and app naming. Confirm in writing that tooling you pay for remains your property.

Certifications and import documents by market

For Europe the relevant path is the L1e/L2e type-approval framework alongside CE marking (RED, EMCD, LVD); for the United Kingdom it is UKCA; for the United States, FCC applies where the product radiates, and local road-use rules vary by state. Latin America, the Middle East, Africa and Southeast Asia each have regional approvals. Per shipment we provide the commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading or air waybill, certificate of origin on request, and for regulated products the declaration of conformity, EMC and safety test reports and the lithium-battery transport documents, issued in the importer's name where the market requires it.

How a first order works

Send the target models, quantities and destination market through the inquiry form; we reply within one business day with the wholesale price list and MOQ sheet, and a single sample unit can be ordered first to evaluate a model. Wholesale production normally runs 20 to 35 days from deposit and artwork confirmation, plus sea transit.

Questions buyers ask about electric mopeds

What license class do electric mopeds fall into in the EU?

In the EU they sit under the L1e/L2e type-approval framework together with CE marking (RED, EMCD, LVD); the exact class depends on top speed and power, so tell us the destination market and we will outline the compliance path. UKCA applies in the UK and FCC where the product radiates.

Do you provide the type-approval and conformity documents?

We provide CE marking with the declaration of conformity plus EMC and safety test reports, and coordinate per-market type approval with the notified body your importer nominates. Documents are issued in the importer's name where the market requires it.

Are the lithium batteries documented for transport?

Yes. Every shipment includes the UN38.3 test summary and MSDS for each lithium cell and pack, with the air, sea and land transport reports, alongside the commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading or air waybill.

Can the units carry our brand and battery labelling?

Private label covers logo, colourway, packaging artwork, firmware strings and the companion app name; tooling you pay for remains your property, documented in the contract.

What is the MOQ and how long is production?

A single sample unit can be ordered first to evaluate a model. Wholesale production normally runs 20 to 35 days from deposit and artwork confirmation, plus sea transit.
